This book is labeled as a Historical Romance, but I think that it's fair to warn you that it is also one of the best erotic romances I have read this year, maybe ever. Elizabeth Hoyt made the words "May I" sound like the sexiest thing you can ever hear from a man.
Eve Dinwoody was traumatized by something terrible in her past which has made her terrified of both dogs and men. But Eve did not let that her fear totally rule her life. She tries to life her life in a way that is comfortable to her with her friend and guard Jean-Marie by her side.
When her brother was forced to "leave" London, he put her in charge of his funds. Determined to help her brother, Eve goes to the pleasure garden that he is funding to know where all the money her brother is putting in the place is being used.
When she meets Asa, her life was never the same again especially when she cuts off his funding to rebuild his dream.
I had so much fun reading about Eve's reaction to Asa. Asa was mentioned in the first book in the series (Wicked Intentions) as being the mysterious brother of the Makepeace family.
It's nice to finally know what he does for a living, but it was really disappointing to know why he lives and breathes his job. There's got to be more to the story of why Asa's dad disapproved of his passion as well as why Sir Golpin did not leave anything to the House upon his death. A lover's spat maybe? This is just my thoughts, but I can't help but wonder what happened to the two friends.
Anyway, back to the story. Asa is one of the manliest men on the planet. He solves problems with his fist first and then ask questions later. He's everything that Eve fears yet, she is not afraid of him. He intrigues her and Eve wants to become someone special to him, even with she thinks as herself as being plain.
This is the first book in a while that I liked both the main characters. Eve and Asa are perfect in each other. Eve is sweet and has a heart of gold while Asa is rough around the edges with a kind heart. For most of his life, his pleasure garden was all that mattered to Asa.He lived and breathed his garden, but when Eve entered his life, he found something else that he centered his life around.
When Asa realized about Eve's trauma, he is compelled to help her and the way in which he helped her is so VERY erotic. Who knew that just watching can be a turn on. You'll know what I mean when you read the book.
This book is filled with humor, love, family and sabotage. You will be entertained for hours with every page you read. My only criticism of the book was that the antagonist was taken care of too easily. The antagonist was also not really needed since the romance in the book was all that was needed to make this book as great as it is. I found myself just wanting the problems with the garden to be over so that I can read more about Asa and Eve.
Old and new fans of Elizabeth Hoyt will truly enjoy the book and I think that she was hinting of a love interest for Eve's brother, The Duke of Montgomery or it's just my wishful thinking. Well see now won't we.
