This book is a thing of beauty. I would not have thought to write a book like this. The emotion and the drama contained in the pages of this book, blew me away.
Phoenix Fuller was the type of girl your parents told you to stay away from. She lived in a trailer park with a mother who scorns anyone. Children were thought to stay away from her although she has not done anything to deserve their scorn.
Having an obese mother who is also a hoarder, Phoenix did not grow up in a nice environment. When, for some strange reason, the handsome and popular Riley Stinson wanted to be her boyfriend, Phoenix was desperate not to lose him.
When he suddenly broke up with her, Phoenix was in a panic. To make matters worse, she found out that she was pregnant and was anxious to get Riley back.
Yes she stalked him at school, yes she called him excessively on the phone and yes she still loved him but there was no way she drove over the current girl he was dating.
Unfortunately, there was no one in her corner and she was sent to jail for 16 years. Now that she is out, she wants to have a relationship with her son even with everyone in town hating her guts.
Riley Stinson does not want Phoenix in his son's life. After what she did and the rumors he heard, he just does not see how having her back could be healthy for his son. If meeting his mother was not so important to his son, Riley would have done everything in his power to keep the two apart.
Strangely the more time he spends with Phoenix the more he likes her and soon he lets his guard down around her. Unfortunately for him, Phoenix has learned her lesson and goes out of her way to avoid any contact with him.
Would Riley fall back in love with Phoenix? Would Phoenix open herself up again for extreme pain? Would Phoenix's innocence be proven? Find out in the eighth installment of the Whiskey Creek Series, This Heart of Mine.
This was my first book by the author +Brenda Novak and it was aMAZing. When you hear about an ex-con, you immediately think bad thoughts but Phoenix's sweet and shy manner made me love her right away.
She was so afraid of being hurt again that she was in constant flight mode. If anyone offered her even a little bit of kindness she was instantly suspicious. When you read this book, the type of abuse Phoenix went through is unjustly earned. All she wants to do is to know her son and not to interfere with anyone's lives, is that too much to ask?
Riley, on the other hand, I did not like too much. He kept his son from knowing his mother and with every rejection he sent Phoenix, she replied with kindness. He helped ruined her life and when he starts to have feelings for her again, he feels hurt that she won't open up for him. I mean, can you blame her?
Phoenix is busy trying to get her life on track, take care of her troublesome mother and have a relationship with her son, oh and did I forget to mention that (almost) the whole town hates her. The least Riley could have done, was to leave her alone and go after someone else, but he could not even do that. He redeemed himself at the end of the book, but I still barely like him.
This book is heartwarming and insightful and teaches you that you should not be too quick to judge. Because Riley listened to the views of his parents and did not think for himself, he set out a chain of events that hurt many people in its wake.
So thinking about it, this is all Riley's fault! Don't you believe me? Then you have to read the book and find out.
